Lazarus took Japanese in college (very few students attempt to take two languages as difficult and different as Chinese and Japanese simultaneously so he would have been less likely to encounter non-native speakers of Chinese there) and since canon L would have a grasp of a language as commonly spoken as Mandarin (but probably with a heavy accent and definitely not as his first language) I think this could trigger an echo.
