What is returned is the ability to survive that bullet to the face, demonic survivability. What this encompasses is two parts, one rapid regeneration that allows him to heal from essentially any injury that doesn't outright kill him. Continued damage over time will slow the effect, and larger amounts of damage still take time to heal, but barring death nothing will be lasting.
The second part is durability, the ability to not immediately die from many things that would otherwise kill a normal human. Falling from great heights, bullet to the forehead, sword to the gut. What can kill him is a direct blow to the heart, continued sustained damage past his regeneration point, and probably decapitation? He survives getting punched into a crater by a three-story tall monster, so he can take a beating but he's not invincible. Just very, very durable.
Extreme amounts of damage can bring him near death still (passive Devil Trigger may still be necessary), even if they won't outright kill him they can take him down. Blah blah I am rambling if there's anything else let me know?
