The understanding that that sort of mentality is what sets apart humans and demons, and that to succumb to it is a quick trip to the land of no return. That the temporary "power" gained from such actions is fleeting, and ultimately superficial.
Basically it is the beginning of understanding the nature of souls. Not that he'll necessarily understand that bit just yet.

It doesn't seem to indicate he's got anything crazy like a bloodhound nose, but strong enough to differentiate between species or identify if someone is in a room with him he can't see. Barring them disguising their scent of course. Of course it also shows he can be overwhelmed by certain smells and absolutely hates cigarette smoke, it's so awful.
