FAQ

WHAT SORTS OF CHARACTERS ARE ALLOWED IN GAME?

Canon Characters:
Goes without saying, but published characters.

Canon Alternate Universe (AU) Characters:
The game allows characters that deviate from the mainstream canon, but only those that are also published. For example, the Marvel Comics canon has a large number of alternate universes. Any and all of them are appable, but player created AUs are not permitted.

AU Duplicates:
The game does not allow duplicate characters in the most direct sense- i.e. the exact same character twice. However if they are notably different to a version already in game, they may be allowed to be applied alongside their alternates. The difference must be sufficient to justify this. The general rule of thumb is that if material aspects (appearance, history, powers etc.) are left out of the equation their personalities are different enough they might not be recognised to be the same person. A character that is no different between two universes even if the worlds are altered could be applied, but not alongside another version they are identical to. If in doubt, ask before starting on an app.

Original Characters:
Original characters can be applied for, but in general will require more detail in their applications.

Game Setting Originals:
Characters from the game world and therefore a completely ordinary human can be applied. This may not seem appealing in early gameplay, but will become more relevant in later seasons. There will also be chances in the future for players to apply for members of the enemy's army.

HOW MANY CHARACTERS CAN I PLAY?

Each player is presently allowed five character slots. This may actually be more than five characters, due to Combo Apps.

WHAT ARE COMBO APPS?

The simple answer is that they are apps for multiple characters that will count as one towards your character count. More information is on this page.

CAN I USE POSTS OR THREADS FROM OTHER GAMES AS SAMPLES FOR MY APP?

Yes, but we may ask for an original sample if it is felt it is needed. It shouldn't be a big deal, as long as you pick an example you are confident in. Note too that at least one of the samples must feature the reincarnated character rather than their canon counterpart.

CAN I CANON UPDATE?

Considering the nature of the game, that'd be unnecessary.

CAN MY CHARACTER LEAVE THE CITY?

Technically, yes. There is nothing physically preventing any character from hopping the next bus out of town. However, in gameplay terms a couple things are likely to keep them there. First and foremost, their ordinary life is still there. They'd be abandoning their home, job and family. Secondly, during the first few seasons travelling too far from the city will cause the traveller to temporarily lose all their Echoes and any Echo related memories, meaning if the decision to leave was related to the game's plot they will promptly forget why they are so distant from the city and probably just come back home anyway.

YOU KEEP MENTIONING SEASONS, WHAT'S THAT ABOUT?

A season is the term here for a period in which the game setting remains relatively stable. Once the player characters achieve (or fail) certain goals or certain plot points are completed, the setting will be changed.

THE SETTING WILL CHANGE?

Yes, in reaction to player character actions and the plot's advancement. Currently there are no plans to reveal future seasons, but please be aware that the game will change a lot as time goes on. This is not an exaggeration.

BUT I LIKE THE CURRENT/PAST SETTING MORE!

Whenever a season ends a dressing room will open indefinitely with the same setting as that season. Not quite the same thing but likely this is the best we can do, we're afraid. All players past, present and future will be able to play in the DRs even if they drop from the main game.

DOES THE GAME HAVE A PLANNED ENDING?

Short answer: yes. Long answer: sort of? The game will end whenever the conflict that is the crux of the game is over, either with the enemy or the player characters succeeding in their goal. No previously confirmed ending exists; whether it's a good ending or a bad ending is up to the players. It may take a year or it may take five or more. What happens then will be decided by the players.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A CHARACTER DIES?

They're dead, barring player character interference; there is no game mechanic to return the dead to life, and if the same character is re-applied, they will be a completely new 'version.'

WHAT HAPPENS TO A CHARACTER WHEN I GO ON HIATUS?

They temporarily lose all their memories, abilities and items from Echo related occurrences and once again become a completely normal person. Attempts to remind them fail and they then even forget those attempts. By default they are completely out of the loop regarding gameplay, although players can make other arrangements if they wish.

WHAT HAPPENS TO A CHARACTER WHEN I DROP?

Assuming you don't kill them? The same as above, but permanently. If applied for by another player, it will be new version. If a former player reapplies, they can choose to regain all memories and Echoes or start from scratch.

CAN I APP A CHARACTER SOMEONE ELSE PLAYED BEFORE?

Yes. In this case, the character is assumed to be from a parallel universe with an extremely minor difference that doesn't otherwise affect any major events. The reincarnated character must also be different from the previously-played character, with a different name, history, etc.

MY CHARACTER HAS AN INHUMAN APPEARANCE, WHAT HAPPENS?

You have two choices. Have them start as a human who will transform into their inhuman form through Echoes or start as the closest terrestrial creature to their inhuman form and have their first Echo give them sentience (but speech is optional).

ANY LIMITS TO WHAT WE CAN GIVE OUR CHARACTERS IN THEIR REINCARNATED LIVES?

Not really, so long as you're reasonable. It's fine to make them extremely rich, so long as you don't make them the richest man in the world, for example. Some characters will have IC advantages over others, but that's all they are. IC advantages.

ANY POWER LIMITS?

Not in the traditional sense. It just happens that powers are recovered bit by bit.

WHAT ABOUT THE 4TH WALL?

Intact at present. For now please just don't bring it up that characters are from fiction which should rightfully exist in the game setting. It'll be subject to a player vote at a later date.

IS THIS EXTRA-DIMENSIONAL HORROR INSPIRED BY LOVECRAFT?

Nope. If anything it's more inspired by Earthbound.

MY CHARACTER RECEIVED THEIR FIRST ECHO A LONG TIME AGO, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR GAMEPLAY?

The network the characters use went live on April 1st, 2013. Any attempts to the number to connect to it before then simply didn't work and therefore its importance would likely be overlooked. At game start, a mysterious pink light in the sky reminded the characters of their number and a similar process, sans pink light, will awaken the number in the minds of characters when they join the game. This means that they can receive their Echo at any time, but be disconnected from the rest of players until the moment they join.

WHEN ARE EVENTS RUN?

Often, but chaotically. They will not occur at regular intervals to fit a routine. They will be no self resolving events. They will all require player involvement to end and may overlap with each other. Whenever an event is occurring a plotting post will go up to help OOC communication.

SEASON ONE SPECIFIC FAQ
WHAT'S DIFFERENT BETWEEN THIS EARTH AND NORMAL EARTH?

Only one noticeable difference so far, the existence of Locke City. The North American continent is a tiny bit bigger to fit it in.

CAN MY CHARACTER REVEAL THEIR SUPER NATURE TO THE PUBLIC?

Preferably not. The Season One dynamic is based around secrecy in the normal world, but there's no game mechanic to cause it. Characters will be pressured to remain in secret for their own safety by a number of in-character reasons brought about by plot circumstances. For that reason, please don't apply for characters that could not reasonably be persuaded to keep the secret. With permission, you'll be allowed to reveal the secret to a few ordinary citizens depending on circumstances. Additionally, they don't have to be particularly good at keeping the secret nor a willing participant.

WHAT NPCs CAN I USE?

Players have automatic right to use their character's direct relatives (siblings, parents, spouse etc) for any reasonable purpose. Similarly ordinary citizens can be used for anything reasonable, but people in positions of authority (politicians, military, police) require permission. If in doubt, ask.

WHAT ABOUT PLAYER PLOTS?

Outside of the guideline of keeping the secret and remaining IC, you basically have free rein to do as you wish. Particularly big stuff I'd appreciate being run by me first but otherwise I'm very open. Just be aware there may be consequences you didn't expect. I did say the setting will react based on player character actions, after all.

WHAT SORT OF EVENTS WILL RUN THIS SEASON?

The plots of season one will revolve around giving hints to the overarching plot that the players are already privy to by the characters are not. This will involve the enemy's forces trying to establish a foothold on Earth and the conflict beginning to escalate. Primarily they will be action and intrigue based, and relatively low profile in respect to how they effect the public. There will also be plots in relation to character actions.

We are currently approaching the END OF SEASON ONE.

If you are a potential new or considering player, please read up on what can be expected in the change in seasons here before you make plans on when and how to enter the game!

Reservations will remain OPEN until February 16th.
Applications for Season One will remain OPEN until February 23rd.

Hi, I have a couple questions I can't find the answers to. Possibly there are obvious answers/the questions have been asked before and I'm just missing it, in which case I'm sorry, but I was wondering:

How would physical echoes work for an AI who doesn't have a physical body? I know non-human characters reincarnated as humans gradually transform back into their original forms, but what happens if they have nothing to turn into except for code? I mean, I'm having difficulty figuring out what the intermediate stages between "regular human" and "disembodied chunk of code" would be, basically.

Also, how would powers/abilities work for such a character? Strictly speaking they don't have any, but due to being an AI, they can do things humans can't, so I'm not sure how that would fit in.

Psst. If a wily little git such as this one was to have frozen a few trays of ice cubes made of tainted water for potential later use, would that actually work out? Would they still induce echoes (in people who never got a dose of it before) and/or giggling in reincarnates in the future, or does gigglewater have an expiry date?

Thanks!

so kind of a question to test the waters -- at what point would it be acceptable to start considering echoing back a giant robot?

a gundam still seems like too much for a tier 2 (though if i'm wrong you can correct me!) even though i'd want to echo it back with no external weapons or fancy programming or power-ups, and take real-world consequences into account, like fuel and energy and a place to hide it. but seeing as how it's his only real weapon/power/personal macguffin and i've been sitting on my hands i'd just like a point of reference to maybe work towards in the future if it's not doable anytime soon!

A got a few of questions, in a character's reincarnated life are they allowed to have had children? And are they allowed to share a reincarnated history with someone from their canon or even a different canon? Whether this be relatives of some sort or an actual couple?

A canon-specific question: would Homestuck trolls be able to echo back their lusus at some point as a creature echo? I'm assuming that's alright since they don't really have enough characterisation to be apped separately, but wanted to check just in case.

EDIT: WAIT I HAVE ANOTHER QUESTION

Octavia just echoed back a huge pile of treasure! If she tried to give some of it away or spend it, would it all come back to her as with single-item-echoes? Or can she give some/all of it away without it re-appearing back in her basement?

I have a few of questions. I just need a few clarifications before I get into working on this app. Firstly do the reincarnations' lives have to be tied to Locke City for the span of their entire life so far? Or can they have done some traveling and lived in different countries (been born in a different countries/cities) before they finally settled down in Locke City?

Secondly since I am apping a character that was previously played in the game, would it be feasible for him to have moved into the city recently? I can already promise you that the outline I am working on for his reincarnated life is likely drastically different from the previous player's history for him. But before I go creating an official timeline for him, I figured I would make sure if what I have in mind is even doable in the setting.

Okay, inquiry!

Before my hiatus, Pierce was formulating a plan to create a type of anonymous forum where people could post about their problems without having their identities associated with it. This would include the following features:

- multiple people with moderator status
- anonymous posting enabled
- auto-screened comments pending moderation (to prevent ic harassment in theory)

Is this something that is possible to create over the numbers network? Or would it be something that could only exist elsewhere? I'm not entirely sure if we've had instances of either moderated replies or multiple parties being able to control an entry. My best guess is Pierce would have to turn to some other internet hosting resource but I figure it never hurts to check.

So about the first echo... If the character was living in an entirely different country for most of their lives, would they be able to have an echo before they moved to the city, or will it have to wait until they move there?

Two quick questions:

01) How many characters can you apply for at one time (obviously assuming you know how many you can realistically handle at once)?

02) I didn't see anything that said applications opened or closed on certain days so they look like they're always open, but I like to take into consideration game timing and all before deciding which character(s) I'd want to bring first. Is there a waiting period that the mods prefer between applying multiple characters. EXAMPLE: Say for instance that you reserve the limit of two. You apply for one character you reserved, then another not reserved. Applications are processed, those two come in. Then guessing a third could be added later when the next batch of applications is processed. Is that correct?

Hopefully those questions make sense this early in the morning!

Apologies for the teal-dump, but... queries and stuff:

1) You mentioned in answer to a previous question that there was no way for characters to recover hundreds of years of memories without hundreds of echoes, but that might be changing in "the near future". Any updates on that count? Alternately, is there any way for a character to regain some of the effects of centuries of life without personally re-experiencing years and years of memories?

The character I'm looking at (this kid, Czeslaw Meyer) is an Actually Three Hundred Year Old Immortal perma-stuck in a ten year old body. His canon personality is heavily dependent on those centuries of life-- both because of the crap he goes through and just because centuries of life experience gives him a very different way of thinking. While I'm absolutely fine with starting him in-game as a regular ten year old, I'm less sure about apping him if there's no way for him to ever recover enough personality/memory to be like his canon self.

2) Czes only has one supernatural ability (Immortality), but it's... pretty big. Could he recover it in one Echo, or would it need to happen in stages over a series of events?

3) You mention in multiple answers that memories and abilities take separate Echoes to recover, but also that doing things related to one Echo can sometimes trigger another (as per Vin's allomancy). If Czes' immortality got kickstarted by a similar-to-canon injury, would healing from that injury be able to trigger a memory of the circumstances previously surrounding it?

A question about Echos. Can the character get items that are important to someone important to them? Like, if I wanted Killian to get the Arkenstone despite that being way more important to Thorin rather than Kili, could I do that?

This is Salsa; I have a brief question about apping an original character. When I app, do I need to have everything I'll ever use for canon history ready to go, or can I app with part of my history up to a certain point, and fill in the rest later? The only reason I'm asking is because I'm able to supplement Winter's history with new content from new episodes of her canon as they air; does the same apply to adding new stuff to an OC's storyline as I create it, or do I need to have everything written out? Normally I'd be able to canon update, but considering how Save the Earth works as a game, I don't have that option open. Thanks in advance.

Hi guys! Two quick questions here:

- If a character receives a physical echo (such as scars, tattoos, a strange nose, etc.) and attempts to remove them with cosmetic surgery, would they stay removed, or would the physical echo return?

- ...this is way more specific and probably doesn't belong on an FAQ, but I wasn't quite sure where to put it! I found this article that has some pretty good details on the daily life of a homicide detective, specifically a homicide supervisor! This is about what I'd imagined Nick's job to be, but I wanted to run it by you guys to make sure that'd be all right before I started mentioning it specifically. Since I didn't specify anything other than "homicide detective" in his app, but recently looked into it a little more.

Have a few questions and apologies if I missed this being asked, did skim the last few pages but could have missed it.

1. What would happen with ongoing canons and finding out that a new installment has something in it that happened in game and would have caused an echo, but obviously we couldn't request it because we didn't know about it?

To give an example of one that at least is recent and I could request still, in the newest Ace Attorney one of the cases deals with a bombing of the courtroom, so the bombing of the Dead District on the 23rd could cause an echo for that, what if that had been months ago and the game just came out today?

2. Related to #1, what if someone gets a castmate later on and they would have pre-CR that would likely cause an echo?

3. Not related to either, just been meaning to ask this in case it ever comes up, can we echo back items that belonged to multiple people in the canon if our character had possession of it at one point even if our character is not the primary owner? The main thing I'm looking at is Maya's Magatama since Edgeworth had it for two days, but Phoenix and Maya would have a legit claim to it as well, but also a lot of evidence in AA canon that would have been seized as evidence and even some showed up in multiple cases. If it helps, most of the stuff this applies to for me at least isn't one of a kind or can be easily duplicated, even the Magatama is something that each medium in Kurain Village would have as far as we can tell.

Can characters find the name (and possibly photo?) of the Chief of Police of Locke City just by like googling it or something? That information is available IRL for the chiefs of police of major cities, but I just want to make sure.

And would there be any names or other information easily available online of other police officers in the city?

I know you don't allow AUs, but would it be possible to app in a canonically cismale character with a cisfemale reincarnation, and simply never have them echo back their pre-incarnation sex and gender?
Aka they might remember that they were cismale in their former life, but they would still remain cisfemale in this life.

Hey I'm the one who just reserved Thranduil from the LOTR franchise and i'm eagerly working on Thranduil's app........

and..... no one's like... expecting me to write out EVERY SINGLE POINT OF ELVISH HISTORY for this right like, it's so expansive and Thranduil isn't a part of a lot of it but a lot of concerns him and it's just very difficult to even get my head around the idea of pulling a full Tolkien for this app and now i'm scared.... should i just do a vague history, or only his history that we actually see in the books/movies or?

maybe i'm just being lazy but... the silmarillion is really intimidating ok................

also also i plan on having thranduil be Very Influential Rich Guy and own a lot of companies and business and etc which wouldn't necessarily put him at knowing Thunder Corp execs or anything, but he'd probably Know People Who Know those sorts and stuff. would i be able to do that? he'd at least be like "X? oh, they'd never. I know those people, you're all making this up," but he totally doesn't know them haha i guess what im asking is everything about TC confidential or are some of them known in certain circles?

Combo apps! I'm wondering how close do the reincarnated characters have to be? Would it be possible for the two to have never met until they start doing game things, slowly becoming closer as mutual echoes bring them together?

Cant see this anywhere -- but what is the stance on malleable protagonists? Anything specific, or is it just 'use the canon app form and back up your assumptions'?

For the record: thinking of apping a Dragon Age warden, and they do have family info and so on that is canon, it is the choices that are customisable.

Okay, time for another random question like I tend to ask when I get app ideas into my head. We've got a few characters in mind from Cardcaptor Sakura, CLAMP's old series full of pink and cherry blossom petals and I'm rambling. Anyway, I wanted to ask about playing from a mashup of canon sources. CCS has an anime and a manga, and while the two are largely the same, there are certain things that are different between the two... but not different enough to break everything should they both be introduced side by side. Would it be possible for us to app from a combination of the manga and the anime, or do we need to pick one? (Part of the problem is that we eat a character or three if we stick to the manga.)

Are game setting OCs/non-reincarnated humans still applicable? I've been toying with one or two character ideas (leaning towards your token ~intrepid journalist~ who gets inevitably caught up in the crazy conspiracy shit) but I don't think I've seen anyone app one yet, and there doesn't actually seem to be a form for one in the app page. I figure if I did app a setting-OC, I'd just ignore everything that refers to reincarnation...?

Could I ask how a character from Assassin's Creed might work out?

They're not technically reincarnations, but Desmond has all the memories of at least four people in his head.

If I wanted to app one of those people, would they have their own memories only, or would they remember being Desmond being them or... I'm confusing myself.

Like if I wanted to be Altair, I'd only have to worry about his history and stuff, right?

If character A writes their network number on a sheet of paper and adds a few lines, and then starts to talk to character B, could their conversation be recorded to the network? Alternatively, if character A writes their number on a sheet and character B adds things, would both show up in a post? Even if neither is doing it on purpose?

aka, could they create an accidental post by exchanging their numbers by writing them down on paper?
