FAQ

WHAT SORTS OF CHARACTERS ARE ALLOWED IN GAME?

Canon Characters:
Goes without saying, but published characters.

Canon Alternate Universe (AU) Characters:
The game allows characters that deviate from the mainstream canon, but only those that are also published. For example, the Marvel Comics canon has a large number of alternate universes. Any and all of them are appable, but player created AUs are not permitted.

AU Duplicates:
The game does not allow duplicate characters in the most direct sense- i.e. the exact same character twice. However if they are notably different to a version already in game, they may be allowed to be applied alongside their alternates. The difference must be sufficient to justify this. The general rule of thumb is that if material aspects (appearance, history, powers etc.) are left out of the equation their personalities are different enough they might not be recognised to be the same person. A character that is no different between two universes even if the worlds are altered could be applied, but not alongside another version they are identical to. If in doubt, ask before starting on an app.

Original Characters:
Original characters can be applied for, but in general will require more detail in their applications.

Game Setting Originals:
Characters from the game world and therefore a completely ordinary human can be applied. This may not seem appealing in early gameplay, but will become more relevant in later seasons. There will also be chances in the future for players to apply for members of the enemy's army.

HOW MANY CHARACTERS CAN I PLAY?

Each player is presently allowed five character slots. This may actually be more than five characters, due to Combo Apps.

WHAT ARE COMBO APPS?

The simple answer is that they are apps for multiple characters that will count as one towards your character count. More information is on this page.

CAN I USE POSTS OR THREADS FROM OTHER GAMES AS SAMPLES FOR MY APP?

Yes, but we may ask for an original sample if it is felt it is needed. It shouldn't be a big deal, as long as you pick an example you are confident in. Note too that at least one of the samples must feature the reincarnated character rather than their canon counterpart.

CAN I CANON UPDATE?

Considering the nature of the game, that'd be unnecessary.

CAN MY CHARACTER LEAVE THE CITY?

Technically, yes. There is nothing physically preventing any character from hopping the next bus out of town. However, in gameplay terms a couple things are likely to keep them there. First and foremost, their ordinary life is still there. They'd be abandoning their home, job and family. Secondly, during the first few seasons travelling too far from the city will cause the traveller to temporarily lose all their Echoes and any Echo related memories, meaning if the decision to leave was related to the game's plot they will promptly forget why they are so distant from the city and probably just come back home anyway.

YOU KEEP MENTIONING SEASONS, WHAT'S THAT ABOUT?

A season is the term here for a period in which the game setting remains relatively stable. Once the player characters achieve (or fail) certain goals or certain plot points are completed, the setting will be changed.

THE SETTING WILL CHANGE?

Yes, in reaction to player character actions and the plot's advancement. Currently there are no plans to reveal future seasons, but please be aware that the game will change a lot as time goes on. This is not an exaggeration.

BUT I LIKE THE CURRENT/PAST SETTING MORE!

Whenever a season ends a dressing room will open indefinitely with the same setting as that season. Not quite the same thing but likely this is the best we can do, we're afraid. All players past, present and future will be able to play in the DRs even if they drop from the main game.

DOES THE GAME HAVE A PLANNED ENDING?

Short answer: yes. Long answer: sort of? The game will end whenever the conflict that is the crux of the game is over, either with the enemy or the player characters succeeding in their goal. No previously confirmed ending exists; whether it's a good ending or a bad ending is up to the players. It may take a year or it may take five or more. What happens then will be decided by the players.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A CHARACTER DIES?

They're dead, barring player character interference; there is no game mechanic to return the dead to life, and if the same character is re-applied, they will be a completely new 'version.'

WHAT HAPPENS TO A CHARACTER WHEN I GO ON HIATUS?

They temporarily lose all their memories, abilities and items from Echo related occurrences and once again become a completely normal person. Attempts to remind them fail and they then even forget those attempts. By default they are completely out of the loop regarding gameplay, although players can make other arrangements if they wish.

WHAT HAPPENS TO A CHARACTER WHEN I DROP?

Assuming you don't kill them? The same as above, but permanently. If applied for by another player, it will be new version. If a former player reapplies, they can choose to regain all memories and Echoes or start from scratch.

CAN I APP A CHARACTER SOMEONE ELSE PLAYED BEFORE?

Yes. In this case, the character is assumed to be from a parallel universe with an extremely minor difference that doesn't otherwise affect any major events. The reincarnated character must also be different from the previously-played character, with a different name, history, etc.

MY CHARACTER HAS AN INHUMAN APPEARANCE, WHAT HAPPENS?

You have two choices. Have them start as a human who will transform into their inhuman form through Echoes or start as the closest terrestrial creature to their inhuman form and have their first Echo give them sentience (but speech is optional).

ANY LIMITS TO WHAT WE CAN GIVE OUR CHARACTERS IN THEIR REINCARNATED LIVES?

Not really, so long as you're reasonable. It's fine to make them extremely rich, so long as you don't make them the richest man in the world, for example. Some characters will have IC advantages over others, but that's all they are. IC advantages.

ANY POWER LIMITS?

Not in the traditional sense. It just happens that powers are recovered bit by bit.

WHAT ABOUT THE 4TH WALL?

Intact at present. For now please just don't bring it up that characters are from fiction which should rightfully exist in the game setting. It'll be subject to a player vote at a later date.

IS THIS EXTRA-DIMENSIONAL HORROR INSPIRED BY LOVECRAFT?

Nope. If anything it's more inspired by Earthbound.

MY CHARACTER RECEIVED THEIR FIRST ECHO A LONG TIME AGO, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR GAMEPLAY?

The network the characters use went live on April 1st, 2013. Any attempts to the number to connect to it before then simply didn't work and therefore its importance would likely be overlooked. At game start, a mysterious pink light in the sky reminded the characters of their number and a similar process, sans pink light, will awaken the number in the minds of characters when they join the game. This means that they can receive their Echo at any time, but be disconnected from the rest of players until the moment they join.

WHEN ARE EVENTS RUN?

Often, but chaotically. They will not occur at regular intervals to fit a routine. They will be no self resolving events. They will all require player involvement to end and may overlap with each other. Whenever an event is occurring a plotting post will go up to help OOC communication.

SEASON ONE SPECIFIC FAQ
WHAT'S DIFFERENT BETWEEN THIS EARTH AND NORMAL EARTH?

Only one noticeable difference so far, the existence of Locke City. The North American continent is a tiny bit bigger to fit it in.

CAN MY CHARACTER REVEAL THEIR SUPER NATURE TO THE PUBLIC?

Preferably not. The Season One dynamic is based around secrecy in the normal world, but there's no game mechanic to cause it. Characters will be pressured to remain in secret for their own safety by a number of in-character reasons brought about by plot circumstances. For that reason, please don't apply for characters that could not reasonably be persuaded to keep the secret. With permission, you'll be allowed to reveal the secret to a few ordinary citizens depending on circumstances. Additionally, they don't have to be particularly good at keeping the secret nor a willing participant.

WHAT NPCs CAN I USE?

Players have automatic right to use their character's direct relatives (siblings, parents, spouse etc) for any reasonable purpose. Similarly ordinary citizens can be used for anything reasonable, but people in positions of authority (politicians, military, police) require permission. If in doubt, ask.

WHAT ABOUT PLAYER PLOTS?

Outside of the guideline of keeping the secret and remaining IC, you basically have free rein to do as you wish. Particularly big stuff I'd appreciate being run by me first but otherwise I'm very open. Just be aware there may be consequences you didn't expect. I did say the setting will react based on player character actions, after all.

WHAT SORT OF EVENTS WILL RUN THIS SEASON?

The plots of season one will revolve around giving hints to the overarching plot that the players are already privy to by the characters are not. This will involve the enemy's forces trying to establish a foothold on Earth and the conflict beginning to escalate. Primarily they will be action and intrigue based, and relatively low profile in respect to how they effect the public. There will also be plots in relation to character actions.

We are currently approaching the END OF SEASON ONE.

If you are a potential new or considering player, please read up on what can be expected in the change in seasons here before you make plans on when and how to enter the game!

Reservations will remain OPEN until February 16th.
Applications for Season One will remain OPEN until February 23rd.

For Gavin, in the far flung future he's going to Echo back his Asura form Vayu but the only problem is that he'll be hungry and most likely try to eat the first person he comes in contact with. I've planned this out with Link/Luke ([personal profile] songoftimeandtimeagain) mun and we're excited for it but there's the problem of... getting him to stop. In canon the only way to bring an Asura down from that berserk stage is either them devouring someone or Sera's Song. We don't have a Sera, and I definitely don't want anyone actually getting eaten (especially not a ten y/o.)

We jokingly talked about Saria's Song working in its place but I'm sure we could limit it somehow? Like he's not strong enough to have his full Asura powers yet or something so after a while he'd just... stop chasing Link/whoever and revert back to his human form and pass out (like a werewolf)?

also random but its kind of implied that the AI in game (gale, argilla, serph, heat, cielo) aren't... real people obviously and get super confused about normal people things, like not knowing what a fridge is or a toilet or anything like that say you get an action command to click on a bookshelf with bottles on it Serph won't know what they are etc how could that be Echoed if Gavin would know those sorts of things to begin with? Or should I just not worry about it?

if I were to app a game-setting-original completely normal human character, how would they get access to the network?

So there are a few characters in-game that could transform into titans in their previous lives! Most of the ones in question being 14-15 metres tall. Golly gee gosh.

I was just wondering - around when would it be likely that the characters in question could echo that ability back in full (or a scaled-down version, even - say, half that size)? Assuming there was an appropriately large (DOHOHOHO) trigger for it, obviously. 8V

From what I understand, the boundary/center of Echoes has been identified (or at least narrowed to an X and/or dotted lines on a map), so Elian's moved on to another sort of experiment. Namely, examining the qualities of extradimensional/echo'd items.

SCIENCE TECHNOBABBLE TL;DR'D because HE may teach quantum stuff but I sure as hell don't, are there any unusual qualities to the items that could be identified via an electron microscope or, ideally, a scanning tunneling microscope (assuming Locke University has one; I assume that they have the former if not the latter)? NAMELY a common thread between them all; Elian has a theory that they're going to hold some residue from not being 'native' to this dimension, so that's what he's looking for, basically.

His current working theory is that the Numbers Club is/are connected on some level to other dimensions, but nothing near reincarnation or anything. More like, for lack of a better phrase, they're resonating on the same frequency as other beings, and so sharing memories/items/powers/etc.
This also explains where the missing left socks go when you do laundry. To those other dimensions. They may or may not fall through the theorized 'thinner' dimensional area around the Tuning Towers.

A question about physical changes: do they happen gradually or with an Echo? In Killian's case, would he start to shrink down to dwarf size now that he's had a few Echoes or does he need an Echo telling him he's a dwarf in someway before it can start? The same goes for accents--would he gradually gain his Kili accent or does an Echo need to jumpstart that?

A couple questions of curiosity!

1) Say I have a superhero that summons their weapons/armor/power suit from another dimension or home base. (This is a frighteningly frequent commonality in my fandoms.) When it comes to receiving their powers back, how would that summoning have to be handled?

2) If one is to be apping characters that will require a Combo App, am I correct the proper process would be Combo Request > Reserve for both characters as one app if approved > Application itself? Sorry if I missed something, I just didn't see anywhere that notes Reserves in relation to Combo Apps.

EDIT-

2B) While I'm thinking about it, on the subject of Combo Apps. If a character has a pet or partner-like character that still has enough personality to be their own character (re: Digimon, or the Buddyroids in Go-Busters,) my assumption is that they'd have to be human as well? Or am I off there?

Considering it's about to be relevant if the Precure reserves make it in, I have a couple questions on sentient pets, in this case Raquel, but possibly extending to other Precure fairies if anyone is insane enough to follow my lead and bring another in.

First, can they get to the network at all if they're not combo-apped? As in, could Raquel get to the network, or would he need to use a mundane text-message to contact people?

Second, can I combo-app Raquel to Winter in his current form? Or does he need a human form first? If I can (or even if I can't, since he'll get that back eventually anyway), what do I do for that, since I'm adding to a character that's already in the game? Do I need to throw a request into the applications post first, like I'm apping from scratch?

I'm sorry, I know I've kinda been abusing my plushie with reckless abandon, and I'd rather make it official at this point.

Okay so if I were to app a Star Trek character from the original series, would I also be allowed to have them echo things from the 2009 reboot?

I'm thinking that the AU in canon isn't enough to say they're completely different characters like yes, Spock and Spock Prime exist in the same time line now in the reboot but i don't think it would make sense to like, have someone app Kirk from TOS and someone else to app Kirk from the reboot? There's not enough differences.

I guess I'm asking if I were to app one of the characters, can I draw from both the OU and AU, since they're so similar? Or would they have to be separate things?

Hi!

I'm wondering if it's alright to app a character reincarnated as an FBI agent into the setting? The character would be relatively low-ranked (having just qualified as a field agent) and would have originally come to Locke City under the pretence of investigating something more minimal like white collar crime, and would be completely in the dark to any of the more... out there stuff going on.

Soooooo I'm considering apping a character who in his canon has amnesia and can't remember anything from before the age of approximately 13. Does this mean that his echoes can only be of things that he received/remembered from the age of 13 onwards, or could I give him echoes from before he was 13 as well?

Can a pet which has enough sentience and dependence to be combo apped, yet is dependent on a pair of masters who are independent of each other, be combo-apped with one of those two masters, assuming that the other master's mun has given permission?

Two questions!

1) I know the Thranduil a couple of pages back asked about how much detail you need in history, and this is sort of related, but basically most of Glorfindel's history is tied into events that aren't in the films and need an awful lot of extra explaining to make sense. Is it all right to list off things like the Noldor, the Helcaraxë, or Ulmo if I've included a link at the top of the section that they're searchable on, or would you rather I link directly on anything that I think needs further explanation? Putting the detail in what I'm actually writing is going to involve me writing a long essay about the history of middle earth (which I can easily do and started to do before I realised how long it was getting, I just don't want to expose you to my tldr also in that case I might as well just rewrite the elvish parts of the Silmarillion).

2) For Glorfindel's first echo I'd like for him to regain his youth (I'm apping him as ~50, but with elves being immortal Glorfindel doesn't look that old and also there's wear and tear on the body that wouldn't have happened to him in canon) and I'm not sure if this would be too big an echo for his first one? I'm intending for it to take a long time (about a week/year, so it'd take 30 weeks for the transformation to be complete and 10 before it was obvious and undeniable what's happening), and obviously it wouldn't include any of the other physicality of being an elf (pointed ears etc), just literally turning the clock back to how he was when he was 20.

So, I'm thinking about apping a character who is originally an AI construct in their canon. Given that characters can regain their inhuman appearances, would it be possible for her to attach herself to a computer or would she have to Echo back the [robotic] body she gains at the end of the game?

Mkay so I'm thinking about apping a character with multiple personalities. Or, that's the easiest way to put it, the situation is actually really complicated. If any of you know Umineko no Naku Koro Ni, then, it's Yasu. If not, seriously don't bother looking it up...........

She has like five different made up personalities that mostly started as imaginary friends. And then she started being them. At some point she as herself pretty much stopped existing and was solely the personalities. They're all fully aware of the situation and even interact with eachother. They're also each fully separate people, they each have and want to keep their own lives, sort of vying for the use of the body they share to be the only one. For any one of them, the others don't have an impact on their personality and life outside of what any relationship would. But for Yasu, she's all of them, and they're all her, even though she also wants one to win out in the end. There's two endings to it and in the magic ending they all end up splitting apart and what was Yasu becomes Beatrice (they all get their own body pretty much because magic).

So basically, all these people are separately appable people. Any of them but Yasu would only echo their own memories. So finally my questions, A) Yasu would probably be echoing all of them though - yes? B) Would this require a combo-app, or...?

I have a question about apps. For summarizing a canon character, mine kind of requires bringing up a lot of what other characters do. This is kind of making me fret that I'm making my summary a bit too long. So I was wondering is there a certain point where it becomes unacceptable for summarizing? Like is there a length restriction. Obviously not an essay but I'm just wondering.

Hello! Potential apper here, and I read through a couple other questions, mainly this one, but wanted to make sure I was interpreting it correctly, so I thought I'd just go ahead and ask more specifically.

1st: I was thinking of having Sona's initial Echo be something that happened in her childhood - but with a delayed reaction?

And 2nd: I was thinking the effect of this would be psychological muteness. I wanted to make sure that's alright?

Small, silly question.

Say there is an item that was in the possession of two different characters for extended periods of time.

Is it possible for both characters to regain that same item at any point or not?

Edit - Actually, let me provide context.

In episode 1 of Heartcatch Precure, Yuri utilizes the Heart Perfume as her transformation device. When defeated, she loses it and instructs the fairies to take it to the new Precure. Which is Tsubomi.

So, the implication is that Tsubomi uses the same Heart Perfume that Yuri did prior to the series proper.

When applying for Lily I considered her power set a bit too narrowly - I was thinking where she was at the END of the series, as opposed to things she had through her entire life. (Such as the Heart Perfume VS the Heart Pot, what she uses later on to transform, or her lost fairy Cologne.) Seeing that Chery got her Heart Perfume back, it strikes me that if Lily ever runs across it, it could potentially trigger THAT back instead of the Heart Pot.

Hi! So I've been meaning to ask this for a while and just got around to it now that the end-of-season announcement went up.

What if one were to app someone from Proud's tribe -- the local one that venerates the snakes? Is there anything we'd need to know? Demographics and distribution, any cultural things, any beliefs they have about the snakes? Is there a reserve in the Locke area at all and/or predominantly aboriginal neighbourhoods in the city?

Just a thought.

Season Two applications

[personal profile] lucky_goat 2014-01-08 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Wasn't sure where to put this...

A friend of mine plays a couple of characters here and has gotten me pretty interested in the game. I was reading up on applying, and it mentioned that season one is almost over. In season two the numbered are going to be allowed to leave the city in order to hunt down the rest of these giant pink snake things.

The ... frame story of the game seems to suggest that the numbered only exist because the earth needs them to protect it; and only needs them in Locke city because that was where the problem started.

So the long buildup really is leading to a question . Since the numbered can leave the city, and there are going to be problems all over... at the start of season two, can we make numbered that originate from places other than Locke?

Hi there, question about ability echoes:

So say my character's powers mostly consist of summoning creatures to cast magic and attack on his behalf, like Pokemon. Would each creature count as one echo, or would he have to echo back the creature and then echo back each creature's skills individually?

Is it possible to app a character who in canon has somewhat major changes in their personality due to an ...other part of them awakening and who discovers that parts of their personal and all of their family history are a big lie, and app them basically with their canon history as they think it is at the beginning of their story as their reincarnated history?

As in, Bran at the beginning of his canon thinks that he is a normal boy, son to Owen Davies and a mother who ran away, and has very human personality. Over the course of the books it turns out that he is actually King Arthur's and Gwenhwyfars child and was transported through time as a baby and left with Owen for his safety, and when he slowly assumes his position as Arthur's son, aka the second Pendragon, he basically "echoes" a persona that to a good degree changes his personality and provides him with powers and items, etc.

Would it be possible to app him with a reincarnation that has basically the same personal history up to the start of the books, but has him *actually* be Owen Davies's biological son, and his mother *actually* just being some random lass who couldn't stand to stay around? (It would make for delicious confusion and angst, is all I'm saying, and with the start of the second season probably allowing for a character to awaken in Wales...) Obviously there would still be minor modifications considering that the story is set like thirty years ago, but nothing major.

If this was too convulted to be understandable I can try again.

I had a question about reincarnated characters appearances. Assuming the character is perfectly human in their pre-incarnated form, do they have to retain the exact same appearance in their reincarnated form? More specifically is there a specific rule that says a female character cannot be reincarnated a male or vice versa? My apologies if this question has already been answered elsewhere in this FAQ.

I HAVE TWO QUESTIONS!

1) How are echoes handled for characters who already have a canon memory loss? i.e. in their canon they go through most of it with their "real" memories sealed and just do their thing; would the echoes progress canonically or would the "real" be interspersed with what they experienced while those were locked?

2) Echoes of canon power! If your character's canon powers were dependant on a flow of something like MP/mana from another character from their canon, how does that apply if they ever regain their capabilities via Echoes? The character I'm thinking of (Halloween from Witch Hunter) has increased strength/speed/durability etc when her Master supplies her with mana, but without that she's average? Without the seal that hides her "real" memories (the Q above) she's actually way stronger than with the Mana supply.

SO I GUESS would the Mana even matter to get the boost in strength/speed etc or would it be ignored altogether without the supplier, or would she get back her "real" strength?

;u; sorry for weird questions

3) THOUGHT OF ONE MORE but can blind characters see the network, and if so, how?
