City Development

BASICS

The city does not have a predefined geography. It is instead primarily left indistinct for the purpose of allowing the players and the plot to add what they need when they need it. For a general idea of the current weather, please see Ocean City, NJ; however, again, this is not a strict rule and may be bent for the purposes of plotting.

If you add something to the city geography beyond the generic, just drop a small note of it here. It's only for the purpose of building up the city's contents and perhaps allowing players to coordinate elements together. For example, how many of the school age characters go to the same school? Does someone work at another's favourite pizza joint?

The city contains the obvious for a real world developed city in the USA. Within the surrounding area (and in range of the player characters) is an agricultural hub, taking advantage of a particularly fertile stretch of ground. Similarly a few large woods and forests are in range. Locations of note include:

TUNING TOWERS

The third tallest building in the USA at 1,350ft tall. The building is situated in the centre of the business district. Tuning Towers is known for its design that resembles a tuning fork, a combined base but split into two separate towers higher up. It was commissioned by the industrialist Harry Tunings, who had the design made to reference his name and not the other way round.

DEAD DISTRICT

Not officially known as such, the Dead District is the nickname for a large area of long abandoned buildings, that due to legal issues have been left standing to dilapidate. Although the expense is minimal in purchasing the land, every few years someone does and gives up on achieving anything with it quickly. The area spans several blocks and is inhabited by a small society of the homeless population. The name stuck after the then mayor claimed the entire district had dropped dead overnight.

FORT TURNER

A military installation just about in the range of the player characters. Fort Turner is a US Army base famous during the Revolutionary War for changing hands between the British and American forces an extremely high number of times. The base houses a small military museum within its boundaries, which is separated from the main installation.

LOCKE CITY UNIVERSITY

Abbreviated LCU, Locke City University is a moderately well-known and longstanding institution of higher learning with a considerable population of both full-time and part-time students. While the colleges and degree programs offered are varied, there is a particular focus on history, engineering, Asian studies, and a pretty decent medical program, complete with a teaching hospital adjacent to campus. Their school colors are red, green, and white, with a polar bear mascot named "Bliz" - a source of either embarrassment or fierce defensiveness depending on who you talk to, as well as various controversies over the years due to the claimed "Christmassy" theme in a place that's not even very North Pole-like.

Bullets : A Shooting Range

[personal profile] flamberge 2013-09-18 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Bullets is a shooting range located several blocks north of LCU. It's easily missable among all the shops and stores, especially due to not having any standoutish colors and a fairly dull colored sign. The inside is actually very well maintained and cleaned. Simply put, it's your typical shooting range.

The owner is an old man named Robert Allames, a retired cop and lover of firearms. He seems gruff and tough but will happily chat up anyone who seems willing. What he will not tolerate, however, is any sort of messing around in his establishment and WILL kick out anyone who tries.

Espresso Yourself is a locally owned coffee shop located near LCU and was clearly named by a smartass. Take Starbucks, get rid of the goofy hats, make it affordable and less watered down, and BOOM, perfect hipster douchebag hang out spot.

It's not that interesting, but it IS delicious.

Forest Park

[personal profile] shiromadoushi 2013-09-29 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Formerly the site of a failed public housing project that was bulldozed some 50 years ago, Forest Park is a plot of land that is either owned by the state, the city or the feds (all 3 want nothing to do with it and say it's the problem of one of the other 2) that has been left to nature since the infamous housing project failed. There are a few paths through it, but nothing official and no upkeep has been done. It's close enough to the Dead District to share some of the stigma, yet far enough away that it's out of the range of what Thunder Corp is buying up.

(Loosely based on Pruitt Igoe)

Armco Station

[personal profile] nevergivesup 2013-10-23 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
One of several gas stations located on one of Locke City's main streets. Rather than a convenience store, however, this one has a moderately sized automotive garage behind the gas pumps. It's a privately owned business but between honest, quality work and the owner's willingness to haggle prices, it's managed to survive against bigger competitors and is going strong. This shop is capable of servicing both cars and motorcycles, though it mostly caters to cars.

Annabelle's

[personal profile] sun_sun 2013-10-29 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
A family-run Italian restaurant downtown. Doesn't do much advertising, but word of mouth is that the place is quite nice - decent prices, good atmosphere, great food. Named after the daughter of the owner, who can occasionally be seen helping out around the restaurant.

Starlit Stage

[personal profile] glorifiedtrash 2013-10-29 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
A Cirque du Soleil/Kaleido Star-esque stage on the city bay. Plays of great acrobatic feats and colorful pageantry are held here. Being performed by a circus troupe they're definitely more on the artsy side and have a heavy focus on exhibitions of skill with few, if any, speaking parts. The stage itself is a large, domed building with a retractable roof (to a certain extent) to allow for a starry view during evening performances on good nights. Tickets run from modestly priced to fairly expensive depending on your seating, but the stage does run matinee shows twice a week in the afternoon.

Locke Air Force Base

[personal profile] ex_elude798 2013-12-05 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
The base is situated on the southern end of the city, at the end of a main road. It's characterized as a Fighter Wing, tasked to train pilots and provide air support to ground forces worldwide. It serves as the HQ for the Eleventh Air Force. Their craft are seen flying over the city during training exercises. Within the base are a few retail outfits in which only Air Force soldiers (or those using their military I.D.) can work and make purchases.

White Pines Psychiatric Hospital

[personal profile] dead_black_eyes 2013-12-10 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
A modern and well-kept campus with men's, women's, and children's buildings, each with low and high-security wards. They have 20 doctors and therapists on-staff, as well as varied nurses, orderlies, and custodians. It's well-known for its many large windows (the glass is damn near unbreakable) and focus on cleanliness. Everything is run on a tight schedule, and though patients in the low-security ward have a variety of privileges, and everyone is well-cared for, the facility as a whole has an undercurrent of corruption.

Some board members, for instance, will accept bribes. And some of the orderlies are a little on the sadistic side when none of the staff members are watching. And some of those patients can be pretty unpredictable, especially in the high-security wards. The majority of the staff is kind and honest, though, if a little bit too patronizing and condescending toward the patients at times.

Helgeandskyrkan

[personal profile] hustru 2013-12-11 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
A medium sized building in one of the better parts of town, hosting a church, offices, group and other public rooms and two kitchens. Originally founded as a seaman's church by the Swedish Church as Gustav-Adolf-Kyrka, nowadays the church is a cooperation between all (Lutheran) Nordic churches and functions as the cultural and practical center of the Nordic people (visitors and immigrants who hold on to their identities alike) in Locke City.
* It offers services in Swedish and Danish every Sunday and in Norwegian, Finnish and Icelandic once a month. All other churchly services can be had in all those languages as well, though appointments might be necessary due to some pastors not permanently residing in Locke. The office is always staffed and able to help in all languages, though.
* There is a variety of clubs and groups meeting in it's rooms, most of them not really related to the religious and more to the cultural aspects of the community. Choirs, parents', children's, teen's, women's and men's groups, scouts, various cultural groups, and so on. Partly in English, partly in one or more of the involved languages.
Language classes are also offered.
The facilities also host cafes and dinners with "Finnish, Norwegian, etc tables" and cultural foods.
Events like Lucia, Midsummer, etc are celebrated in the community.
* A Swedish consulate that also offers services for citizens of other Nordic countries is also located in the building. As such election parties are also held in the building.

Bean & Gone Coffee Shop

[personal profile] hustru 2013-12-11 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
An independent coffee shop, known for heavenly coffee and cocoa, but the smoothies are pretty mediocre. Very homely and warm atmosphere, the furniture more alternative-grandmotherly-comfortable and less modern-stylish.

Pine Terraces Apartment Complex

[personal profile] dead_black_eyes 2013-12-19 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
Located on South Holmes Rd. In a horrible part of Locke City, this studio apartment complex is notable for having the cheapest rent outside of the Dead District and being busted three times for meth labs in two years.

Tenants are typically addicts, illegal immigrants, and graduates of White Pines Psychiatric Hospital (perhaps the allusion to pines in both names is not a coincidence.) The walls are paper-thin, appliances are from the 80's and 90's, and when your bills aren't exactly on time, they shut off facilities. If you can't make rent once, you get a warning. But the second time, your ass is out, so it's best not to play chicken with the landlord.

He comes by once a week to check on things, because he isn't crazy enough to live there.

Locke School of Science

[personal profile] predestinarianism 2013-12-31 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
A specialty high school in the city focusing on, as the name suggests, mathematics and the sciences. Any rising freshman may apply to the school provided they have high enough test scores, and a few rising sophomores from the other public schools in the city can also transfer in. The school is notably tuition-free, as it's still a public school, and has a pretty good reputation academically. The school has a dress code that precisely no one pays attention to.

Lucky Horseshoe Race Track

[personal profile] horsesaround 2014-01-04 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
Just your average run-of-the-mill horse racing track. It's a pretty big location near the edge of the city. The place is in good condition and pulls in quite a large number of people for the races. The owner of the place is a man named Gabe Perkins, a balding, fat jackass of a man. He is nice if you have money and if you bet that money, though.

Aunt Grandma's Ice Cream Shoppe

[personal profile] dead_black_eyes 2014-01-21 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Whether your headache is from brain freeze or trying to puzzle out what kind of relation an "Aunt Grandma" could possibly be, you didn't come to this hole-in-the-wall establishment to be comfortable. High on creamy home-made ice cream and low on atmosphere, the sparse little shop has two lonely garden gnomes in the otherwise completely barren window display and is furnished with cheap plastic lawn chairs and tables.

It's run by two dour, blue-haired ladies who look old enough to remember Prohibition. They might be sisters. You're kind of scared to ask.

THE WINDING WAY BOOKSTORE

[personal profile] bibliofilo 2014-01-24 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
The Winding Way has been in the de Leon family for three generations. It's a small shop downtown that buys and sells books of all kind. You can find just about anything here from classics to the most obscure and strange books imaginable.

There are plenty of places to sit and tea and pastries are sold on occasion.

I AM THE LATEST WITH THIS but Hajime's family has a restaurant in Japantown. It's mostly staffed by family and prides itself on serving very traditional Japanese food. (Unless cousin Toshiki is in the kitchen; he likes to experiment a bit too much, much to Hajime's father's irritation.) There are no California rolls here; and if you ask around Hajime or Hajime's dad, the reaction will not be pretty.

Cock Of The Walk

[personal profile] comparative_insanity 2014-02-01 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
The name is pretty straighforward. It's a pretty big strip-and-dance club where the clientele consists mostly of gay men. One large dancefloor, one sizeable bar, one central stage and several interconnected podiums around the dance floor, for panoramic-style exotic dancing.

Huge neon sign portraying a giant glowing cock outside - that is to say, the poultry kind - with the name spelled out in rainbow letters.

Situated a little bit outside the central downtown district, but not quite all the way into the more unsavorable quarters.

Oakwood Medical Plaza

[personal profile] belphe 2014-02-25 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Oakwood Medical Plaza is a fairly recent addition to Locke City's clinical options as it was established in the early nineties. It is a cooperative of doctors, nurses, and specialists, some of which are residents of the city, and others who make a daily commute from neighboring cities daily. They have a common goal of providing low-cost, quality health care to their members.

Member services at Oakwood include: Radiology, Dermatology, Urology, Cardiology, Physical Therapy, Family Practice, ENT, MRI, General Surgery, Mental Health, and Podiatry from Monday to Friday, 6 AM - 5 PM

Urgent Care and Pharmacy are available seven days a week from 6 AM - 11 PM

They are known for their occasional open-clinic events offering discounted flu shots to the public and Quitters' Workshops for smokers.

It is located just outside of the downtown area.

Espresso Yourself, Version Point 2

[personal profile] dead_black_eyes 2014-05-09 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Since the old coffee shop catering primarily to hipsters was destroyed in March during the Wise Snake disaster, the old business no longer exists. With the windfall from a gold bar echoed back from his roommate, though, L purchased the business and rebuilt it several blocks over from its old location. A two-story brick shop, it is a step up from its previous incarnation, boasting a full bar, a state of the art espresso machine, furniture for dining and lounging, and quite a lot of art, including a mural painted by Solana. The upstairs area is an apartment with six cots and lockers, and two full bathrooms, ensuring that even employees who are between homes are ensured a place to stay so they can show up to work clean and well-rested.

The shop notably prioritizes hiring numbered individuals, and opened on May 9, 2014.

Locke City County Community College

[personal profile] gunhearted 2014-05-19 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
Locke City County Community College is the local two-year college. While not nearly as prestigious as it's nearby university counterpart, it is hardly the worst school you could attend, either. Alumni of the college have started many businesses in the city, and the school pays for billboards of their successful students to be displayed on the highways outside of town.

The main branch being in the city, LCCCC has dormitories and living facilities for its students. There are satellite campuses in three of the neighboring counties that are purely commuter, and they're looking to open a new branch in 2015. The colors of the college are an eye-searing orange and blue, and their mascot is a cartwheeling peanut named Chester.

On the weekends when most of the teaching buildings aren't in use for college purposes, the rooms are rented out for various children's programs and support groups.
