FAQ

WHAT SORTS OF CHARACTERS ARE ALLOWED IN GAME?

Canon Characters:
Goes without saying, but published characters.

Canon Alternate Universe (AU) Characters:
The game allows characters that deviate from the mainstream canon, but only those that are also published. For example, the Marvel Comics canon has a large number of alternate universes. Any and all of them are appable, but player created AUs are not permitted.

AU Duplicates:
The game does not allow duplicate characters in the most direct sense- i.e. the exact same character twice. However if they are notably different to a version already in game, they may be allowed to be applied alongside their alternates. The difference must be sufficient to justify this. The general rule of thumb is that if material aspects (appearance, history, powers etc.) are left out of the equation their personalities are different enough they might not be recognised to be the same person. A character that is no different between two universes even if the worlds are altered could be applied, but not alongside another version they are identical to. If in doubt, ask before starting on an app.

Original Characters:
Original characters can be applied for, but in general will require more detail in their applications.

Game Setting Originals:
Characters from the game world and therefore a completely ordinary human can be applied. This may not seem appealing in early gameplay, but will become more relevant in later seasons. There will also be chances in the future for players to apply for members of the enemy's army.

HOW MANY CHARACTERS CAN I PLAY?

Each player is presently allowed five character slots. This may actually be more than five characters, due to Combo Apps.

WHAT ARE COMBO APPS?

The simple answer is that they are apps for multiple characters that will count as one towards your character count. More information is on this page.

CAN I USE POSTS OR THREADS FROM OTHER GAMES AS SAMPLES FOR MY APP?

Yes, but we may ask for an original sample if it is felt it is needed. It shouldn't be a big deal, as long as you pick an example you are confident in. Note too that at least one of the samples must feature the reincarnated character rather than their canon counterpart.

CAN I CANON UPDATE?

Considering the nature of the game, that'd be unnecessary.

CAN MY CHARACTER LEAVE THE CITY?

Technically, yes. There is nothing physically preventing any character from hopping the next bus out of town. However, in gameplay terms a couple things are likely to keep them there. First and foremost, their ordinary life is still there. They'd be abandoning their home, job and family. Secondly, during the first few seasons travelling too far from the city will cause the traveller to temporarily lose all their Echoes and any Echo related memories, meaning if the decision to leave was related to the game's plot they will promptly forget why they are so distant from the city and probably just come back home anyway.

YOU KEEP MENTIONING SEASONS, WHAT'S THAT ABOUT?

A season is the term here for a period in which the game setting remains relatively stable. Once the player characters achieve (or fail) certain goals or certain plot points are completed, the setting will be changed.

THE SETTING WILL CHANGE?

Yes, in reaction to player character actions and the plot's advancement. Currently there are no plans to reveal future seasons, but please be aware that the game will change a lot as time goes on. This is not an exaggeration.

BUT I LIKE THE CURRENT/PAST SETTING MORE!

Whenever a season ends a dressing room will open indefinitely with the same setting as that season. Not quite the same thing but likely this is the best we can do, we're afraid. All players past, present and future will be able to play in the DRs even if they drop from the main game.

DOES THE GAME HAVE A PLANNED ENDING?

Short answer: yes. Long answer: sort of? The game will end whenever the conflict that is the crux of the game is over, either with the enemy or the player characters succeeding in their goal. No previously confirmed ending exists; whether it's a good ending or a bad ending is up to the players. It may take a year or it may take five or more. What happens then will be decided by the players.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A CHARACTER DIES?

They're dead, barring player character interference; there is no game mechanic to return the dead to life, and if the same character is re-applied, they will be a completely new 'version.'

WHAT HAPPENS TO A CHARACTER WHEN I GO ON HIATUS?

They temporarily lose all their memories, abilities and items from Echo related occurrences and once again become a completely normal person. Attempts to remind them fail and they then even forget those attempts. By default they are completely out of the loop regarding gameplay, although players can make other arrangements if they wish.

WHAT HAPPENS TO A CHARACTER WHEN I DROP?

Assuming you don't kill them? The same as above, but permanently. If applied for by another player, it will be new version. If a former player reapplies, they can choose to regain all memories and Echoes or start from scratch.

CAN I APP A CHARACTER SOMEONE ELSE PLAYED BEFORE?

Yes. In this case, the character is assumed to be from a parallel universe with an extremely minor difference that doesn't otherwise affect any major events. The reincarnated character must also be different from the previously-played character, with a different name, history, etc.

MY CHARACTER HAS AN INHUMAN APPEARANCE, WHAT HAPPENS?

You have two choices. Have them start as a human who will transform into their inhuman form through Echoes or start as the closest terrestrial creature to their inhuman form and have their first Echo give them sentience (but speech is optional).

ANY LIMITS TO WHAT WE CAN GIVE OUR CHARACTERS IN THEIR REINCARNATED LIVES?

Not really, so long as you're reasonable. It's fine to make them extremely rich, so long as you don't make them the richest man in the world, for example. Some characters will have IC advantages over others, but that's all they are. IC advantages.

ANY POWER LIMITS?

Not in the traditional sense. It just happens that powers are recovered bit by bit.

WHAT ABOUT THE 4TH WALL?

Intact at present. For now please just don't bring it up that characters are from fiction which should rightfully exist in the game setting. It'll be subject to a player vote at a later date.

IS THIS EXTRA-DIMENSIONAL HORROR INSPIRED BY LOVECRAFT?

Nope. If anything it's more inspired by Earthbound.

MY CHARACTER RECEIVED THEIR FIRST ECHO A LONG TIME AGO, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR GAMEPLAY?

The network the characters use went live on April 1st, 2013. Any attempts to the number to connect to it before then simply didn't work and therefore its importance would likely be overlooked. At game start, a mysterious pink light in the sky reminded the characters of their number and a similar process, sans pink light, will awaken the number in the minds of characters when they join the game. This means that they can receive their Echo at any time, but be disconnected from the rest of players until the moment they join.

WHEN ARE EVENTS RUN?

Often, but chaotically. They will not occur at regular intervals to fit a routine. They will be no self resolving events. They will all require player involvement to end and may overlap with each other. Whenever an event is occurring a plotting post will go up to help OOC communication.

SEASON ONE SPECIFIC FAQ
WHAT'S DIFFERENT BETWEEN THIS EARTH AND NORMAL EARTH?

Only one noticeable difference so far, the existence of Locke City. The North American continent is a tiny bit bigger to fit it in.

CAN MY CHARACTER REVEAL THEIR SUPER NATURE TO THE PUBLIC?

Preferably not. The Season One dynamic is based around secrecy in the normal world, but there's no game mechanic to cause it. Characters will be pressured to remain in secret for their own safety by a number of in-character reasons brought about by plot circumstances. For that reason, please don't apply for characters that could not reasonably be persuaded to keep the secret. With permission, you'll be allowed to reveal the secret to a few ordinary citizens depending on circumstances. Additionally, they don't have to be particularly good at keeping the secret nor a willing participant.

WHAT NPCs CAN I USE?

Players have automatic right to use their character's direct relatives (siblings, parents, spouse etc) for any reasonable purpose. Similarly ordinary citizens can be used for anything reasonable, but people in positions of authority (politicians, military, police) require permission. If in doubt, ask.

WHAT ABOUT PLAYER PLOTS?

Outside of the guideline of keeping the secret and remaining IC, you basically have free rein to do as you wish. Particularly big stuff I'd appreciate being run by me first but otherwise I'm very open. Just be aware there may be consequences you didn't expect. I did say the setting will react based on player character actions, after all.

WHAT SORT OF EVENTS WILL RUN THIS SEASON?

The plots of season one will revolve around giving hints to the overarching plot that the players are already privy to by the characters are not. This will involve the enemy's forces trying to establish a foothold on Earth and the conflict beginning to escalate. Primarily they will be action and intrigue based, and relatively low profile in respect to how they effect the public. There will also be plots in relation to character actions.

We are currently approaching the END OF SEASON ONE.

If you are a potential new or considering player, please read up on what can be expected in the change in seasons here before you make plans on when and how to enter the game!

Reservations will remain OPEN until February 16th.
Applications for Season One will remain OPEN until February 23rd.

I'm planning on apping a character from Shaman King, and the first Echo I'm thinking of using is regaining the ability to see the supernatural world -- ghosts, spirits, etc. Due to the way that souls work in-setting, though, I was wondering whether human ghosts would exist on earth at all? If not, would nature spirits?

Thank you very much!

Hello! Pardon the fairly specific questions, but I'm debating on characters to app, and, well, here goes:

1. What would you make of an OC that, in their own world, were already a reincarnation (specifically of a semi-mythical folk hero King Arthur type)? Would this be slightly too crazy? Assuming that it was clearly established how much access to their soul's memories so to speak they had in their previous lives, could they work as a normal character in this setting?

2. This is probably going to be reaching, but... my other character option has a pretty significant headcanon referring not to their own personality but to the way the world works, and how it affects their motivation. It's been solidly hinted at, but not outright said and can still be jossed. Would this render them AU and hence unacceptable? I'd give details but it could be spoilery and I'm not sure how up you are on your Bleach manga...

Thank you!!

This is something I keep wondering about--how headcanon-y are we allowed to get when requesting echoes?

For example...it's implied a character has a power, but the details are vague. Are you allowed to restore a version of that power fleshed out with headcanon? As another example, let's say you want the character to get an echo about their childhood, but it's rarely or never really mentioned in canon. Are you allowed to make up a memory for them to reexperience? If we know they hung out a lot with a certain person, are we allowed to give them an echo of a sort of slice-of-life-y scene that didn't show up in canon but probably happened at some point? What about their deaths, if the character doesn't die on-screen or lives until the end of the series, can we give them echoes for a made-up death?

I'm mostly just thinking out loud and being hypothetical at the moment--I'm not much worried about this with Sasame, there's plenty of things I can give him echoes of. But I can see wanting to headcanon stuff be useful for characters that aren't as in-focus as much in the series they're from.

SO i have a question about apping this girl eventually. The original source material for her is the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, which ended in 2008. However, I'm aware that in 2012 the original creators began releasing a comic which is a continuation of the series. I am not familiar with the comics at all; would i be required to include it in the canon history or would it be acceptable to end it at the close of the original series?

Toph has also had a daughter and presumably died of old age by the time of the sequel/spinoff series Legend of Korra, which takes place 100 years later, but I'd rather play her as she was in the original series than have to deal with all the unknowns of how she eventually grew up and died.

I have a question that was probably answered before but I can't seem to find it. :(

Can a sentient 'inanimate' object be appable? I probably shouldn't say inanimate, but I can't think of a better word.

To elaborate, in Bleach there are these swords called zanpakutou, which carry immense power. But these swords are pretty much souls of their own, with their own feelings and thoughts, and they even choose their own name. Only the shinigami they manifested from is able to visit them and speak with the spirit of the sword.

In a filler arc (which I would assume would be canon AU if allowable?), they are given human form and allowed to walk around, trash talk and fight and we are shown their personality, quirks and whatnot. So my question is, would these kinds of characters be appable? Here is a wiki page concerning them, if you need a better explanation.

since i couldn't find this info anywhere sob --

if lina were to research on locke city's history (if there are history books about the city itself that can be found), what kind of information would they find? i was wondering since i know for the city development, it's up to us to assume that locations we need for plot purposes, is it the same for the history of the city as well? like generic state/city history etcetc the city was founded one hundred years ago etcetc?

To be honest, yes, it's kind of meant to be Generic Big City, USA and have the history get made up just like the locations. There's a couple bits and pieces that are decided behind the scenes, but aren't especially evident.

Question: How much canon needs to actually exist of the character to get away with being apped?

Example: Toska's canon has two chapters so far and is starting on a third. So far I know he hangs around a smuggled goods shop with his friend who he travels with all the time, has killed and eaten several humans in the past, and has been away from human society for a long time because (presumably) he and Sela have been travelling through more mystical areas selling to fictional creatures. And now he's on a quest to kill Colin's friends before they figure out the curse behind the poster he and Sela accidentally sold them. And he's made it pretty obvious that he doesn't like killing humans, but has done it a lot and it can be assumed from the way Sela puts it that it happens pretty much every time he's let outside.

Presuming that the game would advance slowly enough / Toska would be lazy enough with echoes that it wouldn't catch up to his comic, would this be enough?

I have two small questions! First, about the geography of the city. Namely: is it landlocked? Or is it reasonably close to the ocean (a lake or river could do in a pinch)? I'm thinking of using it for my character's first Echo!

If there's no water nearby, then my second question is just a clarification: I can use previous game events as my character's first Echo, it just means that she wouldn't have connected with the network/other characters until I get accepted, correct?

EDIT NEW QUESTION! How much leeway do we have on age? Another character I'm considering is physically very young in canon, like no older than 10, with a (partially) much older mental age. I'd probably make her a teenager or something because I think it would be easier to get her involved that way. Is that okay?

Hello and 'scuse me!

I had a wonder - would creatures such as the Vermini and Vermedi attack and mutate reincarnates or creatures connected to them? For example, would it ever be possible that one would target and attack Opalescence (the cat who's "clinging" to Cinderella courtesy of an Echo) for mutation?

To be honest, if the answer is yes, I was curious as to if that very scenario or something close could be arranged at some time in the future, with the difficulty she has meeting the others in person.

Is there any kind of "newness restriction"? I know some games don't like to let a character in if their canon's been out for less than some period of time (two months appearing to be common).

(Considering how long it takes me to write any given app, this may never be relevant to me either way, but I thought I'd ask.)

i am actually really sorry for all this idk if i'm even going to app yet but i'm curious and my canon is stupid

1) Okay first, since canon points aren't an issue, how are you dealing with ongoing canons? Should I just stick a line in my background somewhere mentioning that it's still airing so you know that it's "incomplete" (as far as the character is concerned)? It's not really an issue of there being enough so much as there will definitely be more and I really have no idea just how much more...

And now the fun stuff!

2) If a character is already a reincarnation, and there's the potential for that character to remember things about their previous life, could those memories also be fair game for an Echo, assuming he actually did remember them in canon?

3) Regarding Physical Echoes: could an Echo effect a body part in the same way more than once, such as changing someone's hair one color, and then a later one changing it to a different color? If that character has...canonly had more than one hair color...I only ask because Vector has two canon appearances with hair, and his hair is a different color in each of them...and neither color is exactly natural...

Hi, so, considering (very tentatively) apping a character and I had a question I don't think has been answered yet.

What I would like to do is have this character be somewhat famous (on the level of 'people have heard of her, she ends up in tabloids sometimes, but she's not a huge megastar') pop singer. Would that be possible to do? Is there a limit to how 'normal' they have to be, or would it be okay to make them semi-famous-but-still-a-normal-human?

so yeah essentially I want to make Rukia a popstar mhm

I have a few questions to make sure of before I really get started on parts of the application.

1- Flandre here is the size of a 5-7 year old. Would she still be that size? (Her new 'age' would be 15, putting her into high school)
2- I'm starting her off not knowing anyone, Would she be able to live with NPC's? Or just have a apartment where she lives by herself?
vanisland: (those memories)

[personal profile] vanisland 2013-06-04 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
So, this character has a problem you don't see very often at all: she pretty much has two names, which stems from the fact that she was a major character in two consecutive games of a series (and thus will have a really long pre-reincarnation history).

In the first she's called [this name is technically a spoiler for the second game too, I guess] and in the second, Jacqli (or "Jakuri" to the fans that are really upset with the quality of the localization (in their defense, it really did need some work)).

However, Jacqli is more like an alias, since there are a select few characters in the second game (and even one in the third game, which she isn't in) that still use her original name.

Which name and canon should I use for the reserve and application, given that she is from after the second game?

Hey guys! Quick question- I know leaving the city will result in memories disappearing, but can people receive Echoes while outside the city? Specifically canon reoccurances. Like, maybe they get the Echo quickly and then it fades, but when they get back to Locke City they suddenly remember and have no idea how they forgot? If not, it's cool, just wanted to check!

So here's a thing. I'm thinking of apping a guy from a series with multiple magic systems. One of them he can and does use throughout canon. Another one he, like anyone else on the planet, theoretically could use. And indeed, at the end of canon he has a perfect knowledge of what can be done with it and how. Thing is, he doesn't like Magic System 2, and explicitly says he'd prefer to know much less about it than he does. Should I include an explanation thereof (insofar as such is available; there are, in theory, well over 10600 - a million googols - possible effects, of which maybe half a dozen are revealed to the reader) in the abilities section, or just mention it, or what?

Also he kinda literally turns into a god at the end, which is one reason I'm keeping this question post so vague. How would you guys prefer that kind of thing be handled?
kd7sov: (hit in the face with a rock)

[personal profile] kd7sov 2013-06-05 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
No, whoops, that's wrong. The million-googol figure comes from using entirely the wrong calculation. But there's still a huge number. 4800 or so individual effects, which can be combined to produce surprising combo-effects. Plus some 10,200 special-case singles that probably couldn't come up in StE.

Question about a potential character! This is pretty canon-specific and I don't know how familiar you guys are with Homestuck so I'll try my best to explain this nonsense.

Basically, Jack Noir is a sort of universal constant and exists in a potentially infinite number of universes within Homestuck. All instances of Jack have the same basic backstory and identical personalities, goals, abilities (excluding universe-specific superweapons), etc., but they are also separate characters within the story that have different experiences and interactions with other character. In other words, the notable Jack Noirs are generally acceptable as separate characters in jamjar games because despite being canon AUs of eachother, they can potentially exist in the same universe, and also because their canon relationships are very different from eachother.

But StE isn't the same as most jamjars, so I'm not really sure how you'd want to handle this. Would different Jack Noirs count as separate appable characters (ex. if Bec Noir was apped someone could still app Spades Slick), or would only one version of Jack be allowed, since without their unique histories/abilities they're pretty much identical in personality? If the second, then could one app every instance of Jack Noir into one reincarnated character doomed to have extremely confusing memories?

Just a quick question regarding powers for an app I'm working on for this character.

Her powers revolve around Allomancy, the magic system of her world. Basically, they're fueled by swallowing certain metals to fuel her powers, with different metals granting different abilities. For instance, pewter gives her super strength/durability/endurance etc... and tin gives her enhanced senses.

My question is if her Echoes return these powers one by one could I say that the same Echo would also bring back the knowledge of which metal fuels it or would that memory have to be a different Echo? If the latter could I say in my app that her first Echo was knowledge of Allomancy but without any powers yet?

Couple of questions!

I'm thinking about a character that is undead in their canon- would it be possible, though echoes, to eventually have their reincarnated self "regain" undeath? Possibly having it tied to their reincarnated body actually dying?

Also, what is your policy regarding characters being reincarnated in bodies of the opposite sex as their canon selves? For example, if a male character was born in a female body for the purposes of the Save the Earth AU? Basically, this is a roundabout way of asking what your stance on playing such a character as transgender would be.

Thank you!

Sorry, this turned out to be a little tl;dr...

There's a character I'd like to app, but there's very little canon information on her. I saw in an earlier answer that there needs to be enough canon to support a history/personality without delving too deep into headcanon, so I realize that I can't app the character as they are.

What I wanted to ask was: is it alright to reimagine the character's background to separate them from the canon and app them as an OC instead? And, if necessary, add a note saying what character they were based on?

They've only appeared once (or three times, if you count the drama CD and anime renditions of the original manga), so the only things that are canon are small things like "this is where she lives" or "she laughs a lot" or "she's talked to this person". I would have liked to wait to see if there would be more appearances, but it's pretty unlikely since the canon's been going on for about five years already and the focus is often on other characters.

Two questions!

First off, would it be okay to app in with the intention of starting with one account (based around the reincarnation) and later moving on into a different one once enough echoes happen to get the character closer to their preincarnation self? (As I'm assuming that's the case of what will happen, though I could be wrong.)

Secondly, a chunk of Lina's magic draws from powerful deity-like figures in her world - would she be able to access that at all, either by echoing the figures in somehow, or something else?

Here's a weird question:

If two characters share a body in canon but are apped as seperate people, what happens when they get enough echoes to combine again?

For example, Nevi is actually her own person with a body somewhere out there in spacetime, but because she killed herself with a specific potion, her soul was attached to Gil's and she technically is part of his body. They're not really close enough to warrant a combo app, and in fact Nevi counts more as Gil's adoptive mother of sorts. But if they were apped separately, would an echo snap her out of her body and into his? Or would they not be able to rejoin, making her her own person for good, or...?
